27th September 2025. The launch of EAFC 25. Another year where FC will play a key part in many of our lives. The screams on Ultimate Team when you pack Ronaldinho. Then the rage that builds when you concede on Champions in the dying minutes. The camaraderie that builds over Pro Clubs marathon sessions. Then the toxicity that follows when your striker misses a sitter. The rage boils over and I tell you I ain’t getting FC next year. Then the cycle restarts, the new FC launches and all is forgotten… we will be there.
Growing up most of us would have experienced that moment where a family friend would turn up to the house. You’d initially spend time glancing awkwardly at their kids, not making any conversation. Then you would get that nod of approval from a parent to say you could play on the Playstation. You’d get the controller and pass the spare pad to the guest and ask, ‘Do you want to play FIFA?’ The ultimate ice breaker.
The question that unlocks friendships. Game one there’s still some shyness. But by game 3, true characters are revealed and the energy is present. Your knee sliding in-front of this person after scoring. No care in the world for what the adults in the room are saying. A friendship is born. This was a theme that would carry on throughout childhood and even during Uni years. The best friendships that I had through uni and still have today were strengthened by FIFA.
So when Copa 90 released FIFA and Chill with Poet & Vuj 8 years ago, we all connected to it. Poet & Vuj took on our favourite personalities in the ultimate ice-breaker. A winning formula. Watching FIFA & Chill after-school became a ritual. The concept was simple. Poet and Vuj would play FIFA against personalities, break the ice and ask questions from the Copa Fam. The content was elite entertainment. You could watch it now and still have a nice. Most importantly it gave fans insights into players off-field.
Now we have to give praise to Poet and Vuj. The best things come in twos. A nod to Noah’s Ark and footballing partnerships of yesteryear. Cole and Yorke, Rooney and RvP, Rooney and Ronaldo, Rooney and RuuD (spot the United bias). I digress, but Poet and Vuj’s chemistry was a key part in making this series what it is.
I like many others, only tuned into Copa 90’s world for this partnership. Their presenting skills made you feel like you were just watching your mates play FIFA. Almost forgetting that the people they were interviewing were superstars. The strike partnership of Poet and Vuj would rock up to FIFA & Chill in robes. Off the jump creating a home-like environment. Putting the chill in FIFA & Chill. Poet & Vuj created a space where players could let their guards down.
When it first launched on our screens it was so ahead of its time. It was the first piece of content I saw that allowed players to be human. There was barely anywhere else we could go to as young fans to see this side to players. Typically you’d see players do interviews and just speak about football. A default response due to the platforms they were on. There’s only so much content a fan can watch from players talk about football before they got bored.
As time went on this format transcended football and borders. It brought the likes of Stormzy, Lil Yachty and The Chicken Connoisseur into the world of FIFA & Chill. The concept connected universally. All of my mates who had a console had FIFA. You didn’t even have to be football obsessed to play FIFA. For some people I know, FIFA was their entry point into football. Growing up I was allowed one game a year. I didn’t have the confidence to trick my dad into buying me GTA. So this one game was always FIFA due to the 3+ age rating.
For me this series birthed the entertaining content we see from platforms now. Poet & Vuj walked so the likes of Chunkz & Filly could run. A wave of clubs then started doing FIFA content with players. It proves you don’t always have to do a Mr.Beast madness to engage audiences. Sometimes all it takes is creating a concept your audience will relate to.
FIFA & Chill… gone but never forgotten. 🕊️ Have A Nice 👍 and see you next week!
